A sample comes back. The measurements are close to the chart, but something is off. The shoulder looks wrong, the armhole pulls, the back has extra fabric.
It is tempting to pin the sample, adjust it and move on. But if the pattern stays the same, the next sample and every production piece after it will repeat the problem. Fit issues are usually symptoms. The cause is in the pattern.
Here are six of the most common ones.
1. Shoulder dropping or sitting too far out
What you see: the shoulder seam sits beyond the natural shoulder point, or the garment looks like it is sliding off.
Common causes: shoulder length too long for the intended fit, the shoulder slope too shallow for the body, or a mismatch between the shoulder and the armhole shape.
2. Armhole pulling or gaping
What you see: drag lines pointing towards the armhole, restricted arm movement, or a loose, gaping armhole.
Common causes: armhole depth or shape not suited to the body and fit, too little ease across the chest or back, or a sleeve cap that does not match the armhole it is set into.
3. Sleeve twisting
What you see: the sleeve rotates forward or backward instead of hanging straight, with diagonal folds on the sleeve.
Common causes: the sleeve pitch (how the sleeve is positioned in the armhole) is wrong, notches do not line up correctly, or the sleeve cap shape and ease are unbalanced.
4. Tension across the chest
What you see: horizontal pull lines across the front, buttons straining, or the garment riding up.
Common causes: not enough chest ease for the fit and fabric, a front and back balance problem, or a fabric with less stretch than the pattern assumed.
5. Excess fabric at the back
What you see: vertical folds or a bubble of fabric below the back neck or across the shoulder blades.
Common causes: back length or width out of balance with the front, a back neck that is too low or too wide, or a yoke and back panel that do not suit the posture the garment is designed for.
6. Collar standing away or not sitting flat
What you see: the collar lifts off the neck, gaps at the back, or rolls unevenly.
Common causes: the neckline length and collar length do not match, the collar stand curve is not right, or the collar and band do not have the correct relationship to the neckline shape.
Why measurements can pass while the fit fails
A sample can match every number on the chart and still fit badly. Measurements check size at fixed points. Fit is about balance, shape, ease and how fabric behaves on a body in movement. That is why a fit review looks at the garment on a form or a fit model, not only with a tape measure.
The right way to correct fit
- Review the sample on a form or fit model, and note where the problem shows and in which direction the fabric pulls.
- Trace the problem back to the pattern. Which pattern piece, which line, which measurement?
- Correct the pattern, then update any related pieces so they still fit together.
- Make a new sample from the corrected pattern and review it again.
Don't just alter the sample. Correct the pattern, so the fix carries into every size and every production piece.
Have a sample that doesn't fit?
Send us photos of the sample on a form or body, your measurement chart and the pattern if you have it. Our Fit & Pattern Correction service starts by finding the cause, not just the symptom. You can send your project here.
